OK, so this place didn’t come recommended at all and some of the reviews we read were very mixed. But for only $5usd per night each in a private room you get what you pay for and then a little extra.
Hospitality: 7/10 Most of the complaints are actually about the owner Manuel. He is a bit different but we found he was happy to help when we needed it. One of the main complaints is that he’s not around when you come to check in, this can be true but just make yourself at home anyway. There is a living space on the top floor that is a good place to wait.
Room: 8/10 It did the trick and the sheets were clean. We were on the top floor so had a balcony to use that looked out over the volcano. The shared bathroom could have been cleaned more often but hey, the shower was hot and not electric so winning on at least one front!
Location: 7/10 It’s about a 15 minute walk to town or the bus station but is near a bubbling river so the tranquility makes up for the walk. Manuel will also drop you at the bus station when you leave if you ask nicely.
Value: 10/10 We paid $10 per night which was about half the price of anywhere else we could find in Baños so put us well under budget. There was also a kitchen that was pretty decent and that no one else was using so that also saved us money. Manuel also has some pretty decent bikes to hire for $5usd for the day which is also cheaper than town. The internet was fast enough to stream the UFC so Steve was happy.
Overall: 8/10 Could be improved, I think Manuel just needs a nice wife to help him smile more and add a woman’s touch to the place.
